Overcoming fear of water, step by step

Why adults are afraid of water, and what happens in lessons.

Most adults who can't swim aren't worried about swimming itself. They're worried about losing control in the water: feet not touching the bottom, face going under, running out of breath. Fear usually comes from one of these.

Where does the fear come from?

A small incident in childhood, never having learned, or simply very little time in the water. Whatever the cause, the fear appears because the body doesn't know what to do in the water. Lessons are about teaching it.

How do lessons progress?

  1. Starting in shallow water. The first lessons happen where your feet are firmly on the bottom. The goal is to feel comfortable in the water, not to swim.
  2. Breathing. Blowing bubbles, putting your face in and out of the water, controlling your breath. Much of the fear is resolved here.
  3. Feeling the water hold you. Floating on your back and front with support. Discovering that your body doesn't sink is a turning point.
  4. Controlled movement. Kicking, arm movements, and learning to stand up. Knowing you can stop whenever you want builds confidence.
  5. Moving into deep water. Only when you're ready.

How long does it take?

There is no single answer, and there shouldn't be. Some adults relax within a few lessons; for others it takes longer. What matters is that each lesson feels a little easier than the one before.

If you're afraid of water, just say so in the first chat and your programme will be built around it. Have a look at the Overcoming Fear of Water programme.
